About Tillingbourne.Earth

We are a growing community group of people living and working in The Tillingbourne Valley that are taking action to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss though local initiatives.

Addressing these big challenges can feel daunting and at times impossible to all of us, but we believe that as a strong community we are able to achieve locally relevant solutions that can make a massive difference.

As the Tillingbourne Stream connects our villages from Leith Hill to Shalford, before flowing on to rivers and seas, we recognise that our lives are connected to nature and humanity far beyond our beautiful valley.

Our key objectives are to:

1

Act to reduce the carbon footprint and increase biodiversity, sustainability and environment of the Tillingbourne Valley.

2

Act without any political motivation or involvement.

3

Act to achieve local outcomes.

4

Act in a mutually supportive and collaborative fashion.

5

Act inclusive of all diversity including social and economic groups.

Why Take Action on Climate Change & Biodiversity Loss?

What is climate change?

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. Historically, these shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas.

Burning fossil fuels generates greenhouse gas emissions that act like a blanket wrapped around the Earth, trapping the sun’s heat and raising temperatures. You can read more about climate change here.

Why is this important now?

Without significantly changing our behaviour the rise of temperatures will be unstoppable and the catastrophic global impacts will be felt by us all.  This is why COP26 set agreed targets and changes which all governments have signed up to.  This is the crucial time to change and ensure we arrest the direction of increasing temperature which we have all contributed to.

We must act locally too

Whilst international bodies and national governments must and are acting – we all have a role to play.  The aggregate effects of us all acting and changing our behaviours will have a significant impact on changing climate outcomes.  Experts from the UN to our local Guildford Group (GEF) talk about how we can take the baby steps to make a difference

“A true community is not just about being geographically close to someone or part of the same social web network. It’s about feeling connected and responsible for what happens. Humanity is our ultimate community, and everyone plays a crucial role.”Yehuda Berg
